Here's the problem, the stihl setting gage seems to set the air gap too tight, like 0 004" measured between the ignition module arms and the flywheel magnets using a feeler gage set It seems as though the center coil pick up on the ignition module has a wider air gap Now my question, what is the proper way to measure an ignition module air gap?

It's SOP to inspect gap new spark plugs to your desired gap before installing them They could have been dropped, thereby changing the gap, etc NEVER assume they are gapped correctly out of the box How does the manufacturer know what YOU are going to gap them at?

If the gap is greater than 187” install a 060” flat washer between the torque converter and flexplate 11 Finish installing the cross member, exhaust, driveshaft, etc Add 5 quarts of good quality transmission fluid Start the engine and immediately add 2 more quarts Check the fluid and finish filling the transmission to proper level

Rule of thumb for a naturally aspirated engine 0 004" gap per inch of bore so in your case you should shoot for 0 016-0 017" (4 155 x 0 004) ideally If your gap is 0 032" you probably don't have the correct rings for your 402 (4 125" + 0 030) Just my guess and the reason I always get file fit rings! I use this piston ring grinder from ABS
